Our Beginnings
Legend
runs deep in shallow Toots Creek. In
the 1800s Adam Toot lived and operated a cannery on the very same site where
Toots Creek Antiques Mall now stands.
Samuel
Spencer ran a lumber company in the two buildings adjacent to and behind the
current Mall location. During
the 1940s his son, Ernest Fowler Spencer, took over management of the lumber
business.
Some
time in 1954 Ernest F. Spencer had a larger building constructed to house
the lumber business and to expand into hardware, paints, and other building
supply items (the current site of Toots Creek Antiques Mall).
During the 1970s Doug Spencer took over the daily operation of the
Building Supply Company bearing his family name.
Eventually the Spencers closed their building supply store located
south of the railroad track just south of Toots Creek and leased it for what
was to have been a nursing home. Midway
through the building transformation the nursing home plans changed
leaving the Spencer family with a partially partitioned building on heavily
travelled US 501 in Halifax, VA.
Doug
Spencer was a skeptic seven years ago when his son suggested that the family
use the empty building to open up an Antiques Mall.
Doug, Jr. began a campaign to convince his dad to open the Mall.
His dad thought this was an absolutely stupid idea; however, Doug,
Jr. persisted. Nearly every time
he came home he brought his father an antique tool of one sort or another,
trying to push his idea closer to reality.
Doug, Jr.’s persistence eventually worked.
His dad and mom were finally convinced that an Antiques Mall would
become another chapter in the Spencer Family history.
With a
team of contractors under the direction of Walter Penick, Walter Kraft,
James Stewart and the Spencer family worked nights and weekends for months
to transform their building. When
it came time to name the new venture Doug Spencer decided on Toots Creek
Antiques because of a special childhood memory.
When he was younger he often asked his dad to buy certain things.
His dad, not willing to indulge the youngster, would always reply,
“Sure, you can have it when your ship comes up Toots Creek.”
With Toots Creek not much more than a trickle, that was a pretty safe
way for a father to handle his son’s request.
When the
Toots Creek Antiques Mall initially opened it was truly a family affair.
Daughters Lynne, Dana and Beth all participated in the business
opening in November, 2002. The
mall opened with 30 vendors. Today
the Mall houses 35 dealers who carry antiques, collectibles, furniture,
textiles, oriental rugs, glassware, garden décor, menswear and unique gifts
of all types. Individual room
settings make the Toots Creek Antiques Mall a most unique shopping
experience.
We hope to see you soon!
